American Food Culture?

While I was in Texas a few weeks ago, I came to ponder Americans food culture- and what it is. At an evening dinner and party during W's conference, there was food galore. The evening's title was "Cafe Americana" and it was celebrated by every food you could ever imagine as "Americana." Basically, everything was deep-fried! Where has this food culture gotten us? Pretty big! Anyway, I have to share the food extravaganza. There was deep fried chicken, fried green tomatoes (the only fruit or vegetable to be had that night), meatloaf and mashed potatoes, deep fried tempura shrimp with tartar sauce, pizza, deep fried onion rings, TATER tots and to top it off, ice-cream sundae shakes in banana, chocolate and strawberry. It is amazing how we as humans (or is it as Americans?) go crazy when there is such a smorgasborg. After consuming all such foods listed above, I personally had TWO sundaes, it was all so easily available to me...I couldn't resist the calories and variety.
Anyway, it just goes to show, we can try to be "healthy" and resist, but as humans...we can't always resist. If you want to know more about humans eating patterns, I highly recommend the book Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think You should at least check out the website. Or try the Mindless Eating Meter Mindless Eating Meter and see for yourself!

Wow. That isn't American food, that's southern food! I'm sure W can tell you that everything is deep fried there. I was glad you didn't say that the ice cream sundaes were deep fried as well, but I suppose they're working on that at the Fair right now. :)
