Why I love summer....

I love watermelon. Watermelon has 40% more absorbable cancer-fighting lycopene than tomatoes. It's relatively stable when the fruit is cut and stored too! (Oxygen doesn't ruin it.) So...have yourself some cancer-fighting watermelon this week! And all summer!
I love tomatoes from the garden. These are the FIRST tomatoes of the season! Isn't it a little late!? I'm STILL waiting for tomatoes to grow and ripen...what a dissappointing crop this year! Stupid Bugs, stupid May late season freeze, and where are all the honey bees? :( Ok...I love summer, except when gardening doesn't work out as I had hoped!

I got a pretty small crop of tomatoes this year -- only a handful of Early Girls. I got more cherry tomatoes, but not nearly as many as last year. Last year my cherry plants exploded with fruit. They were huge. This year the plants were mangly and the leaves dried out and died really fast. It's weird because it's been a really cloudy summer. Bummer.

One more thing...So does the lycopene in cut tomatoes oxidize? I thought most of it was in those jelly covered seeds.

My tomatoes have yet to ripen too. :( I think you're right--it's been a bad year for them.
