The Killer at Large

The CDC estimates that in 2006 112,000 people died due to Obesity. That same year 28 Americans died from terrorism. In my opinion, our country needs to refocus what the real terrorist in our country is. A killer within our country that is taking over and killing our citizens. Children that are born today- the first generation of children to have a shorter lifepsan than their parents. This is due to the increase in obesity---> which leads to an increase in Type 2 Diabetes, Heart Disease and High Blood Pressure. There is personal accoutability, but I believe the problem is a bigger problem- it's our food environment. We a thrown into a food environment when calories are avaiable in over abundance and nutrients are hard to find. The human body is meant to thrive in times of starvation- it's the ways it's been programmed for all of time. Now we are in an environment of over abundance.
It doesn't help that "sweets" are added into almost every packaged food out there. High fructose corn syrup is added into everyday common foods to make them "sweeter." This is a smart tactic used by food industries because humans are programmed to have a sweet tooth- if you think about it, sweets are rare in nature (fruit in season, honey, molasses.) This HFCS adds sweetness (an addiction factor) and extra calories. HFCS is a byproduct of corn production where corn is turned basically into high sugar syrup. This is one reason for the obesity epidemic- and there are many other problems HFCS causes as well.

On Wednesday, July 9th at 6:30pm at the Tower Theatre (900 S 900 E) there is a showing about the Killer at Large . Buy tickets at the boxoffice all proceeds are go to a fundraiser for The Wasatch Community Gardens.
